Welcome to the St Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland website.
St. Patrick's, established in 1842, is a vibrant inner city church located in the
heart of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. Since 1848, the Bishop's chair or
'cathedra', has been situated at St. Patrick's making it the mother church (Whare
Karakia Matua) for the Diocese of Auckland. Some 1500 people come to the Cathedral
to celebrate Mass on a Sunday. Hundreds of locals and visitors also call in throughout
the week.
After more than 100 years of faithful service to the community, St Patrick's Cathedral
closed it's doors on Sunday 16 October 2005 for major restoration work. It was with
much joy that we reopened the Cathedral on the weekend of 15/16 September this year.
Another parish within the Central City Pastoral Area, St Benedict's Newton, hosted
the Cathedral parish during this time (www.stbensparish.org.nz). It was with grateful
thanks that we celebrated the last "Pro-Cathedral" Masses on Sunday 9
September and the Cathedra (Bishop's Chair) was returned to St Patrick's.
Thank you to all who contributed to this major restoration and conservation project
Msgr Bernard Kiely
