Tapestry
THE CHURCH, HEART OF THE CITY silk tapestry has hung on the west wall of the
north transept since 1989.
The textile, 1880 mm high and 1280 mm wide, uses appliqué as a collage
technique to create a cityscape with harbour backdrop.
The main feature of the work is a central quilted cross in bright yellow silk
decorated with figures stitched in relief.
The words THE CHURCH, HEART OF THE CITY are rendered in bronze vinyl lettering
attached to the silk background using overcast stitch. The tapestry represents
the Light of God spreading from the cross into the city of Auckland.
