Welcome to the Cathedral

Peace to all as we begin our journey into 2024.

Tena Koutou Katoa, Haere mai ki te Whare Karakia o Hato Pateriki raua ko Hato Hohepa! Welcome to the Cathedral of St Patrick and St Joseph, situated in downtown Auckland, at the heart of New Zealand’s largest city. On 18 September 1840 Apihai Te Kawau of Ngati Whatua gifted 3000 acres of land to Governor Hobson and on 10 May 1841 Bishop Pompallier applied to Hobson for “a sufficient space of land for a church, dwelling house, and for a college, recreation ground for youth and burial ground, for the use of the Roman Catholic public.” Approval was given and three weeks later the grant was made for all the stated purposes at this Wyndham St site with the exception of burials. Two acres of ground were allocated for Catholic use at the Symonds St cemetery.

Some three thousand people attend Mass here each Sunday. During the week thousands more come to pray, light a candle or enjoy a moment’s peace. The liturgical life of the Cathedral is rich and vibrant. May God bless our endeavours as we celebrate Jesus Christ: our Way, our Truth, our Life!

Important Notice for all visitors to the Cathedral

We are looking to find ways to rectify this situation as soon as possible.  Mass times can be found here
